the noise is from the gearbox and not the diff :read:
i read it somewhere & they had a technical explanation, it's because all gears are in a way similar to the reverse gear on jap cars (you know the noise a honda does on reverse :D)

It's the sound of straight cut gears in the gearbox, NOT the diff. You cannot have straight cut gears in a diff, only helical cut.
I'm not sure what's the exact advantage, although I think straight cut gears are much stronger than helical cut ones.sigpic5/94' E36 318iS 5-spd
