    Gearbox Swap????

Hey guys i have a 1996 e39 535i... it is still a v8 though, it is an auto as bmw did not release manual e39s (except m5) in australia... my question is what manual transmission would i be lookin for to do a conversion. M5 ? i have plenty more questions that i will have to ask i am sure. thanks for any help

First off, a manual conversion is a big thing. Theres alot more to it than just a gearbox.
Heres the following needed for a BMW manual conversion:

    Manual geabox unit (Getrag usually)
    Flywheel
Clutch kit (Pressure plate, friction disc, throwout bearing)
    Manual gearbox mounts
Compatible drive shaft (depends, either half of full)
    Clutch master and slave cylinders
    Clutch lines
Clutch pedal assembly (Usually brake and clutch pedals come as one ***.)
    Gear selector/shifter and linkage
    Gear knob/shifter boot
Instrument cluster (PRND is on your existing cluster)
Miscellaneous fittings, nuts and bolts, parts for the whole conversion are needed along the way. Some just for replacement of worn parts.

    That was in brief.

The manual Euro spec E39 535i gearbox is :

Find on of these and youre good to go, but a 540i gearbox will NOT work.

        Get a new one.

The question is, do you have someone to help you updating the ECU and code in the manual tranny?

dont no we got a pretty good bmw mechanic in perth who is pretty well known worlwide so he would probably be able to do it.... i checked for gearbox prices etc and it not worth it, my vehicle + all the costs to swap is almost the same as an m5, so not worth doing.
