The most common mistake wich occurs between 323i and 325i is what happened with the E36, they essentially the same cars with the same engine, M50B25. Differences are, injectors, MAF, DME.....The E36 323i was a U.S. model only.
For the E30s, it's a different story. The M20B25 is mehcnaically the same as the M20B23 but not when it comes to internal dimensions, 2.5l and 2.3l respectively. The M20B25 engine was the replacement for the M20B23, just like the M52B28 was for the M50B25 wich is why you don't much E30 323i's around. It's a rare car these days, but the engine's no different in running and performance than the M20B25, just a little less grunt !
