Manual gearbox is a 6-speed, which the S85 V10 engine wasn't developed to work around. A manual E60 M5 is one of BMWs least desirable cars...

The SMG on the e60 is a pretty impressive system I have to admit, a more refined and agile version of our SMG II... which is impressive to begin with.

I'd personally go with the SMG on the e60... matter of choice :D but definitely enjoy a manual more, I guess it depends on the use of the car

The 6-speed box ratios are "wrong" for the V10, which was designed and tuned to work with the 7-speed SMGIII box...Research it over at bimmerforums and DTMpower.

Its a matter of personal preference.. Eventhough you might enjoy driving manual on E39 M5s, having an E60 M5 means its better to get the SMG trans, the E60 M5s were designed with the SMG transmission. Having said that, E60 M5s with SMG are faster than manual trans, plus you get to enjoy the maximum power with launch control and different gear settings, these dont exist if you get a manual..

                      +1

                      The E60 M5 SMG III gear ratios are 3.99, 2.65, 1.81, 1.39, 1.16, 1, 0.83 with a final drive of 3.62 ... I read somewhere once that the manual has the same old gear ratio that is used in E46 M3 or an E39 M5. 4.23, 2.54, 1.67, 1.23, 1, 0.83... with a final drive of 3.62 !!

So its more preferable to get an SMG III E60 M5
