    5-Speed Automatic Clutch Slipping

About a week ago i noticed that while i was accelerating on al-khail road between 120km/h and 140km/h at around 5800rpm the car would hesitate and then the gearbox would just down shift. This caused the gearbox malfunction light to come on near the selected gear indicator. Once i switched off the car and turned it on again the light would go away but any time i accelerate moderately- hard above 100km/h the car would hesitate and if i don't immediately take my foot off the accelerator, the car would down shift and the light would come on.

I took it to Munich Motor Works (MMW) and they said it is a clutch problem but it might only be electrical so they reseted the ratios and gave the car back to me. However, the problem did not go away and now they are saying i need to replace the clutches in the gearbox. They are willing to do this for AED8,700:eyes2:. AED1,400 for the clutches and AED7,300 for labor.

If anyone knows somewhere else i can take my car to get the clutches replaced for a lower price please tell me cause I'm about to shoot myself.

    Lol, MMW crack me up!!!

It could be your torque converter or valve body. In either case if the fix is this expensive, replacing the gearbox is a cheaper option bro..

To replace the gearbox it would be AED25,000 + AED2,000 in labor.

I'm not sure put they said opening up the gearbox and replacing the clutches is a labor intense job.

I know their prices may be high but they are definitely cheaper than the BMW agency. BMW probably would charge me around AED35,000 for gearbox change.

              Bro, oh my!

You need to deal with us from now on! Nobody has paid these amounts in the past 2 years, we show everybody the light! Opening a gearbox is a labor-intensive job yes, but chances are your box will have issues still.

Trust me, replacing it is cheaper and much more reliable! Want us to find you a replacement??

Tell me about it. I had an E39 530i and had the same gearbox problem. Not the clutch though. It would just get stuck on the 2nd gear and not downshift or upshift. I fixed for approx. 5000 and was good for a while but the problem persisted after a while! The point is, Buy a gearbox and don't bother with the repair. That's my opinion though. A new gearbox would cost you around 2500 to 3500 not sure. The guys would help you out. Good luck bro! you will need it. Gearbox problems are a complete nightmare!!!

I would love to change the gearbox if it is really cheaper. But to be honest i don't see how a gearbox can cost less than AED8,700.

If any one knows a garage that does quality gearbox repairs or replacements please give me their number so i can call them and fix this nightmare.

Ok guy's here is some info !

Causes of the transmission fail safe warning light on!

1.Gearbox oil level low or dirty(change oil and filter)

2.Gearbox oil cooler blocked (causing over heating)remove and flush.

3.Gearbox temperature sensor faulty within the gearbox.Remove gearbox sump and replace temperature sensor.( sensor hidden in wiring harness)

4.Torque converter (turbine sticking) refurbed for 2500dhs

5.Re-adapting the adaptations for the gearbox(valve block)

6.Re-programme the gearbox module with the latest sofware with SSS (SOFTWARE SERVICE STATION).

All of the above should show with the aid of GT1 what needs to be done!!

                          Hope this helps

Thanks for the help but at MMW they plugged my car in and said its a clutch problem.

I called x-service and they gave me the number to Dexol transmission repair specialist. According to them if there only is a clutch problem it will cost me AED 5,000 but if there are some surprises in store for me (which I'm expecting since its my luck) then it will cost up to AED 8,000. So i decided to take my car there tomorrow afternoon since i cant keep driving my car like this.

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction.
