I had a very expensive experience this week when I took my child to a hospital in Dubai.
On Tuesday after lunch, my daughter, age seven, complained of having something stuck in her throat.
My wife realised it was a small piece of fish bone. Unfortunately we could not touch it because it was a bit deep and sensitive and my daughter vomited.
So we went straight to the emergency centre at the hospital.
After 45 minutes we saw a doctor, who immediately removed the bone - it took just two minutes.
Our surprise came when we were presented with the bill - dhs1,225.
First, I genuinely thought it was a mistake. Then I understood it must be the most expensive piece of fish bone in the world!
After, I tried to call the hospital to express my surprise with these kind of outrageous charges and I left my number.
But nobody called me back so far... Anyway, It is too late now but it does show that hospital charges here are disproportionate to the procedure and it is really abusing the patient and insurance companies too.
