2008 X5 4.8is/5.0

    Happy New Year all,

As some know i am busy looking to buy my first car in the UAE. Being a BMW Fanatic, im leaning towards purchasing an X5 over the Pajero i had my eye on.

Do you think its a good idea?
I have seen a 2008 4.8is today and its really clean and looks like it was taken care off by its current owner. Theres also a 5.0 that im going to look at this week.

The 4.8is has 123 xxxkm. The 5.0 has 138 xxxkm.

Are there major problems with these SUV's? Should i steer away and go for something simple?

I dont want to spend loads on big ticket items. Obviously maintenance is key, the current owner seems to have taken good care of it. Just concerned about longevity of big things like motor and gearbox.

Your help and advise is always appreciated.

    Thanks
    Arbee

Happy new year to you too :)

My advice would be to steer away from the 5.0i you might have done your research and found that most in other regions of the world have had absolutely no issues with this engine and say they are reliable. Well, not in this region. I have worked on some, mostly injector failures, alternator/battery - electrical failures, seals and rubbers seem to crack easily around the engine and so forth.

Iam no expert and im sure the club sponsors can chime in, but i would stick to N/A engines. 3.0i or 4.8is.
Either case, make sure you do a full inspection on the vehicle before you lay all the money on the table. Our sponsors in DxB and AD can sort you out. GL with the buy.

      Thank you.

Who would be the sponsor in AD to go to?

So after searching and viewing many X5's, I think we have settled on a car. Its not an X5 but an X3 35i XDrive. Going today to seal the deal and submit all the paperwork, pray it works out.

I have had the car checked out on the police and insurance systems as well as pulled its service history and all checks out good.

Anyone heard of a company called PP Performance? The car has a sticker on it with this name, just want to check with them as to what 'mods' are on the car, i know it has an aftermarket Exhaust.

            Hey Arbee,

Congrats! wish you all the best in closing the deal. The 35i engine has some room for tuning and i'm sure you'll be able to extract more power out of it if needed. However, i have a feeling the previous owner must have got it tuned considering the "pp performance" sticker.

PP Performance are known for tuning most of the german brands, there are a few members here who've got their ///M's tuned by them yielding good numbers on the dyno. Do check with the owner on what mods have been done (besides the aftermarket exhaust).

            Cheers!

Thanks Wazif. No congrats yet... will post up pics once its officially mine.

Yeah, back in SA the x35 in both N54 and N55 (E and F series) reign supreme amongst the street beating groups. I have some parts back home as well. So should everything go well, i will ship them over.

I have yet to make contact with the previous owner, will probably do that today.

Cant wait to attend an event in a BMW.

The X3 is a great platform one of the closest bmw made with mere 50/50 weight balance. With a heart of N54 makes it a monster.
However, the "PP" sticker would scares me. I would take it to a reputable shop to inspect all major parts before buying. Last thing you want is seller getting rid of it to pass on the wallet torch.

                  Thanks for the advice.

I had a chat with the previous owner, he traded it in for an X4 and had no regrets with this car. I have checked with bmw, police ans insurance and its all checked out good.

I guess with buying any used car, one would have to expect some issues. I pray this one treats us as well as we treat it.

Still sleeping on it. Will make decision over the weekend and see what next week brings home.

Getting closer and closer to this... should have a final answer in a day or two.

Just thinking, are there ant aftermarket mechanical warranties in the UAE?

                        And any Insurance contacts?

I have called Kinetechnik yesterday to make a booking for a diagnostic and 100 point check on the car. Left my details, awaiting a call back. Would also like them to do an oil change and basic filter service once i buy a/the car. Hopefully i get a call back soon from them.

So... We getting the X3... Paperwork and wire transfer to sort out. Paid a deposit to hold the car and get the inspection done. Should be collecting later this week or early next week.

Insurance costs are bit more than i expected. Shopped around, quotes range from 2500 to 4000dh. All comprehensive. Not willing to take 3rd party cover only.

Still looking out for a mechanical cover warranty of some sort, or a good mechanic to take care of the car for me, any advice? Im in Abu Dhabi.

I have also found out that the car was modded by PP Performance, it had basic mods only as far as they've told me. Downpipe, Filter/Intake, Software and Exhaust. They have confirmed all mods except the exhaust were removed before the car was traded in. Dealer is giving me a warranty that should anything break he would assist with repairs.

I do understand i an buying a second hand vehicle and risks are there. But i am confident that i will be able to upkeep and maintain once i own it. Also, i have you guys to advise and assist.

                          Looking forward to take delivery...

Here's a couple pics i took at the dealer.

Those red rim protectors are the first to go...

                          Then some cosmetic changes...

Congrats on your purchase. It's probably the best looking Z3 I've seen.
In terms of maintenance that should not be a big deal depending on how the previous owner has treaten it.
