Known issues with the 2006 M6

    Hello Everyone!

I would appreciate if everyone could give their input on the known issues in the 2006 M6, if any.

I have heard that the early models had some issues with the SMG and the Vanos.

    I appreciate the feedback.

    Thanks in advance

just like any other E60 M5...

areas to be concerned with pump, flywheel, clutch...there are a couple of sensors that will die on random basis depending on how unlucky you are.

these parts are not cheap, expect to pay big.

i've heard back in 2008 that the 2006 models had their brakes wear out faster, i got this from locals. so i would throw a wild guess that it's more of their driving style that causes this.
other than that you should be fine. don't pay more than 120k for one. good luck.

      Thanks Bruno.

Would you expect the same issues with the later models, or its just the 2006?

        Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9000/5.0.0.509 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/179)

All models are the same, as I said the brakes could be a driving habit issue.

The pump, clutch flywheel is comon on all and its more of a consumable item that tends to wear out faster than the e46m3 models. Smg3 is smoother than smg2 but from what I've been seeing is that the smg3 is costly and wears faster. Some people's driving habit also helps wear ur clutch/pump and some others depend on luck

Some people might disagree with me but I guess its my opinion.

Well , being ex M5 E60 owner , nothing in those cars called known issues ..

I drove my car 450000 KM ( within 11 months ) and the car was already 74000KM on the clock .. I've never ever had any problem with the car .. what I did is : change oil every 10000KM , and I changed the battery , but looking at other M6 and M5 owners ... some ppl with very low mileage on their cars , they had to change SMG pump , clutch , flywheel ... etc etc ... so basically the conclusion is : the more you take care of your car and know how to use and drive it ( doesn't mean don't get the maximum out of it ) , the less problems and issues you will face ...

I personally ripped the car , i used to drive it like it was stolen ,,, seriously .. but I knew how to use it and how to look after it ... I've seen many ppl for example they switch on the car and immediately rev the engine to the maximum on the road without waiting for the engine to get worm even though the car indicates that by RED LEDs and on the head up display .. ppl don't care .. or maybe don't know what does it mean ..

another story : some ppl they switch on the car immediately after inserting the key in the ignition , I always wait till all the diagnostic lights on the dash switched off ,,then i turn on the engine ... ( maybe it's stupid and some ppl might laugh at this .. :D )

so +1 to what Bruno said ,, it depends on how bad is your luck when you buy a used car , you can't tell how the previous owner used to treat the car ...

anyway Good luck , and personally I don't think you will be able to find an good M6 less than 160K even 2006 , unless it has a very high mileage or something wrong with the car ..

              Thanks Ehssan!

One question though. How did you manage to drive your car 450,000 KM within 11 months?

The issues with the 2006 E6x M5/M6 (built in 2005) are mostly related to the transmission, a lot of cars had issues, but some cars (e.g. in Ehssan's case) were fine... BMW updated the software on the transmission after 02/2006 productions, but still there were some issues, and they re-updated again for the 2008+ models (I haven't read any issues with 2008+ cars regarding the tranny). I would check the car and see what has been replaced/serviced and see if it has any of the tranny symptoms... If you like the drive of the Alpina, then I would look into a B6 or B6s

Early model E63 M6 and E60 M5 (S85) tend to have leaky engine seals. This would be my first area to check when I put the car on the lift. SMG III pump is not a cheap fix, so opt for one that had its pump replaced. Oh and the odd sensors here and there...Make sure it has no ABS warning light on, fixing it can be lengthy and costly.

I'm not sure if you are asking what to look at when you buy 2006 M6 or you are asking about the known issues of the specific production year .. :D

Next summer you will be able to pick up your m6 for 50k, since no insurance company will insure a 5 year old v10 coupe. And on top of that its sporty mpower written on the engine cover will give the insurance nightmares at night
