    Changing SMG Relay - E46 M3

    Since many asked me how it is done ! I've decided to explain it in a very simple way !! I really don't think this thread is necessary even lol...
    • Make sure the the part is called "Salmon Red SMG Relay --- 12 63 1 742 690".


    • Get the new Relay and open up the Engine Fuse Box.


    • Fix the new relay instead of the old one and close the Fuse Box, believe it or not ... That's it !!

          Ive got an E34 with a melted wiring loom to deal with !! That's HARD !

            Since Ive got the manual and not the SMG, for my general info, could someone kindly tell me what does this SMG relay do to your cars ? How does it affect ?

              Well from my understanding the SMG relay is like any other relay in our cars. The main purpose is to regulate and control the amount of electricity feeding the equipment being controlled.......

              So this relay is there to regulate the power operating the SMG pump, and the SMG computer (main modulator). Heat does effect electrical component by changing the resistivity of the material the relay is built of, hence a change in the amount of power regulated..... So when the relay starts to wear off by the excessive amount of heat it will start to cutt off (or decrease) the amount of power fed to the SMG pump of module.

                ....and your SMG pump starts whining when wat bashar stated above happens :)...and reaches a point wher the relay keeps pumping current into the system and drains your battery bone dry! .... :P

                    Don't they make heavy duty relays ? Maby race equipment ?
