    [H] E60 530i (2009) clunk noise

    Hi all,
I'm new to this forums and this is my first post,

2-3 months ago, my e60 started to make a strange clunk noise immediately after ignition-on.
At the beginning, I didn't give so much concern, but 3 days ago I was in AGMC for service, and I asked the service advisor about it, he said that this is very common in V6 engines (530) and it means that my transmission is starting to wear out !! and there's no fix for it except to change the whole gear box, and later my car will start to have problems shifting, and transmission errors will start to come up!!, honestly, I didn't believe him very much, and looked for other people who had this issue on the web, so I found that it was a common issue and BMW issued an SIB regarding this problem, and they say that it's completely an integration problem, and it will be fixed only by doing an update for the SW of the car.
The other day, I went to AGMC to collect my car after the service, and I told him about this SIB but he didn't buy it very much, and he told me that if you insist, we will do a programing for your car but we need to change the transmission fluid first, and the whole thing will cost you about 3000 AED.

So, anybody have gone through this problem ?? or have any ideas of what it could be?? and also, if possible, is there any reliable place to do the programming cheaper than AGMC ?

Please help, and thank you all for your time :)

    Hi SM1,

Welcome to the BMW Club of UAE :)

I would try a full flush and inspection of the transmission fluid for any sign of wear and then proceed with the reprogramming.

There are quite a few BMW specialist garages in Dubai. Infact, one of our sponsor is a BMW specialist garage. Please check our sponsors thread for review and further information.

Do keep us posted on the outcome. it will be of great help to fellow e60 owners :)

Does the jolt/vibration happen before or after engaging the gear?

I will upload a recording for the sound, tried to do it yesterday, but ended up with turning the car on/off 3 times without having the sound, thats the problem, it's not always happening. I'll try my luck today :D

it happens before engaging the gear, exactly after ignition-on, and also it has no relation with what was the last gear engaged (D/R/N) before turning off the car, completely random !!

                  Hey all,
first of all, thank you very much for trying to help me with this issue, I uploaded a voice recording of the issue, and here's the link for it, please note that I recorded ignition 2 times, first one the sound came, the second ignition is normal.

                  thanks for your time :D

I have the same damn issue, will be going to Tony Edwards soon. Lets see what they can find out. I have noticed if you put the key in and wait 3-4 seconds usually the clunk/jolt is minimal ... and sometimes completely absent.

Please Keep me updated, also I've started thinking that the noise is not coming from the transmission, will check it soon , and I don't know if it's relevant, but after 3-4 months from the issue, a week ago, when I drive on a road that it's not normal (no asphalt) like emaar boulevard or going on humps, there's a ringing sound (like when u hit a glass with spoon) coming from the same place as if some metal is hanging from the car and touching other parts.

                      anyway will keep u updated

Ok so sent the car to Emirates American Auto Transmission Co (DEXOL), they said tranny s perfect. i would need to get a software update. Just wondering if the updates only come from AGMC or can anyone else also do it!

                          Any result guys?

Does anyone has an update to this?
Was anybody successful in rectifying clunking sound?

I have the same issue with 3.0 engine.
Have found some possible solutions, but not sure where to start.

Not yet - I have been driving it .. clunk keeps coming at random times / other times it is fine.

What are your ideas? Probably re program the tranny.

Yes, that's what I've heard from other people, that re-programming (and update) is needed.
Not sure why AGMC is not suggesting this saying that it cannot be rectified at all...
