Coolant isn't a complicated topic honestly. What's more important is that you have the car at least stopped for 10 hours before opening the cooling system. BMWs tend to preserve so much heat and create pressure within the system. If you open the system when the car is warm, you'll have air trapped inside, which will cause more harm when the car is driven. Coolant fluid itself can be bought from any gas station.

Looks like you have a bigger problem considering your coolant level was lower than min level. there could be a lead in the system. Suggest you get it checked out as well so that you dont run into trouble later on.

The long term damage to engine due to insufficient cooling could be detrimental. Don't risk it.

For coolant always stick with the OEM. Coolant is sensitive to the metallurgy of the engine and if you are not using the correct coolant, your engine can rust from the inside.
