    The Oil Thread!

    Well,

I recently discovered that BMW is not selling Castrol 10W-60 anymore. So I had to go for OEM BMW Oil SAE 10W-60

Can someone please identify whether this is a better oil or not? Please try to give technical details and specifications to make this thread informative.

    Thanks!

pages 2 and 3 contain some tech info.

New 10w60 default oil from BMW. No more Castrol - Page 5

page 4 has a website that if you plug in the tech sheet from the 10w60 with the latest shell tech sheet it will draw a graph of how these 2 oils look head to head on a chart.

From the thread that Bruno posted, it seems that the Shell oil is thicker than castrol. If this is the sace, the engine should run quieter.

In any case, if your engine is louder, it means that the oil is lighter and is flowing better. So it is in fact, better for your engine.

This means that the thinner the oil the better engine health even it gives loud engine sound.
            Is this true ?

Generally, yes, thinner oils are better as they flow better and thus provide better lubrication and cooling.

However, the most important factors in deciding oil viscosity are the internal clearances of the engine and the film strength. Its a balance between flow and pressure.

Judging an oil by how it makes the engine sound it not the best criteria.

I used original bmw oil (longlife 98)5w-30 and i drove with it only 3000 km , when i went to change it , the oil was dark black and has no more viscosity like water even it only 3000 km used . The mechanic guy at workshop told me that this is very light oil and better to use TOTAL oil 10w-40 sold in gallons because it has better viscosity.
I am now worried and confused not to use original oil or the oil recommended by BMW.

As long as its a 10W-60, its about th same.

All modern lubricants have detergents in them. Some are more effective than others. If your oil comes out dark, it means the detergents are working well and cleaning the engine from inside.

5W-30 is quite a light oil. But if the manufacturer recommended it, its fine.

                    - - - - - - - - - -

This is also the difference between racing oils and normal oils. Racing oils generally have lower detergents and higher wear protection additives. Some wear protection additives can destroy the cats.

Thanks hasan , i felt relive now that the oil is cleaning my engine from inside .

I think its a big mistake to leave the oil 10000km or 20000 km even if it's recommended by oil factory.
it makes engine full of dirts and debris.
I decide to use the only oil recommend by BMW and to change the oil every 3000 km or more frequently to clean engine inside as much as possible .

I agree with Rafik. 3000 km is too low and a waste of oil. 5000 km is a very nice service interval.

                              Hello Mate!

Very sorry for the late reply. I am using Valvoline 5W-50. I think its better than a 10W-50 or a 15W-50 oil.

Have you changed your bearings already?
