I never liked the "Turbo" idea especially on ///M cars.. It's more efficient though.

You guys keep talking about how it's a shame to go from NA engines to FI engines, what else can BMW do? They have been producing NA engines for so long and each engine produced is built to the max power that you can gain out of it. SO, do u guys expect bmw to go for a V12 next and then maybe even more cylinders just to please the NA inspired people?
Come on guys, give them the benefit of the doubt, every new M that comes out is better than the previous one, so just be patient to see this debut then u'll think twice about what u said...

Agree'd !Originally posted by petrolhead View PostThe point is they shouldn't concentrate on just getting the most powerful engine... they should concentrate on the dynamics of the car and making it lighter... lighter cars need less power and are more fun to throw around

Dude, this is not a race car, it's suppose to be a luxurious sedan which includes tons of power, so i doubt weight is their biggest concern, and i doubt anyone on here is smarter nor has more experience than BMW in designing cars...You guys want to compare bmw to sl65 and so on and want bmw's to be faster yet expect them to produce more power out of NA engines, laws of physics say no, the only way to achieve such power is by building bigger and bigger engines were weight will still be a concern...

I never said anything about being a stripped out car... BMW is planning on using smaller engines (i.e. less cylinders) with turbos to save on weight, and also going to use different material sources to reduce weight elsewhere, example by going with an aluminium body will save a whole lot in weight... The whole HP war between the german manufactures have gone to far, MB have already said they won't be doing big engines with massive increase in power (i.e. over 70-100 hp gain compared to the older model), and the other manufactures are doing the same... by keeping the power the same and decreasing weight is a better solution to get better dynamics, acceleration, fuel economy etc.
Straight line speeds are pointless to BMW, it is all about how the car handles... to achieve this you need a lighter car. Simple example, look at Lotus, their cars have small engines, but are light and can embarrass a lot of supercars with bigger engines... this is proper physics, not the stupid way of just put a bigger engine and it will pull all that extra weight....petrolhead

To add that, BMW has already started shedding weight in all the parts (spare parts) that their cars will use now on, so their concern and focus is yes on weight and using smaller engines with turbos.. You're right !Originally posted by petrolhead View PostI never said anything about being a stripped out car...
